Fall Is One of the Best Times to Fish Traverse City

Salmon Continue Their Fall Staging Pattern
The salmon bite has remained solid this week despite the winds as fish continue locking into their familiar fall staging areas.
With calming conditions expected over the coming days after this big north east blow the last two, we’re anticipating an excellent finish to the month. Consistent weather often means more consistent fishing, making this a great opportunity to experience one of Northern Michigan’s most exciting seasons.
Captain’s Fishing Report
For those interested in this week’s fishing patterns, we’ve been finding our best salmon action in the bottom end of West Grand Traverse Bay, with The Hole continuing to produce quality fish.
Salmon have been responding well to Silver Horde plugs and Dreamweaver Spin Doctors with flies. Rather than focusing strictly on the thermocline, we’ve been targeting the fish we’re seeing on the graph, and that approach has continued to produce.
Lake trout remain readily available when targeted in the usual areas, with the best action coming from 90 to 120 feet of water. Hammerhead cowbells fished near the bottom continue to provide dependable trout fishing.
Looking Ahead
While lake trout season closes at the end of September, the fishing season is far from over.
Early October brings excellent opportunities for king salmon, coho salmon, cisco, and some of our favorite fall perch fishing. If you’ve been thinking about getting out on the water before another incredible season comes to a close, the next couple of weeks are a fantastic time to do it.
