Fantastic Fishing Continues in West Grand Traverse Bay

Fishing was fantastic once again this week in Traverse City, with anglers enjoying consistent action on lake trout, salmon, and a few steelhead throughout West Grand Traverse Bay. Summer fishing continues to provide excellent opportunities for anglers of all experience levels.

One thing that made this week unique was the wildfire smoke drifting into Northern Michigan from Canada, creating a noticeable haze over the bay. While visibility across the water was reduced, the fish didn’t seem to mind, and the bite remained outstanding. You can even see the smoky conditions in this week’s photo, making it a memorable snapshot of the week on the water.

Productive Water and Consistent Action

Most of our lake trout action came in 70 to 100 feet of water, while salmon were holding 50 to 80 feet down. Productive areas included the White Walls, where we found consistent action throughout the week. The Orchard also produced several quality catches, while The Island continued to provide steady lake trout fishing, giving us multiple productive areas to fish depending on conditions.

Lake Trout and Salmon Bite

Lake trout remained the highlight of many trips, with Hammerhead cowbells fished on downriggers within the bottom 10 feet of the water column continuing to produce excellent action. Salmon fishing also stayed productive, with fish coming on spoons, flies, and a few meat rigs throughout the week. We also found a few steelhead, adding another exciting species to the mix.

With stable summer water temperatures and excellent fishing conditions, we expect the bite to remain strong as the season progresses.
