Every trip is planned around current fishing conditions, allowing me to choose the location that offers the best opportunity for fishing while keeping your comfort and safety my top priorities.
Depending on conditions, your trip may take place on one of Northern Michigan’s inland lakes, East Grand Traverse Bay, West Grand Traverse Bay, or Lake Michigan when weather safely allows. Rather than deciding weeks in advance where we’ll fish, I make that decision the day before your charter after reviewing the latest weather forecast, current fishing reports, and water conditions.

One of the things I enjoy most about guiding perch trips is introducing new people to fishing. Watching someone catch their first fish, seeing kids get excited every time the bobber disappears or they feel a bite, and helping families enjoy time together on the water is what makes these trips so rewarding.
Yellow perch are also one of Michigan’s best-eating fish. In my opinion, a 10-inch perch is hard to beat for the table, but every perch angler is hoping the next bite might be one of Northern Michigan’s elusive 15-inch giants.
Depending on where we’re fishing, there’s also a chance of catching bonus fish like bass or walleye, adding even more excitement to the day.
We Fish Where the Conditions Are Best
Every day on the water is different.
Weather changes, fish move, and some areas simply fish better than others depending on the conditions. That’s why I don’t assign every perch charter to the same location weeks in advance.
The day before your trip, I’ll determine where we’ll fish based on the weather forecast, current fishing reports, recent conditions, and where I believe we’ll have the best opportunity for a successful morning.
Having the flexibility to fish inland lakes, East Grand Traverse Bay, West Grand Traverse Bay, or Lake Michigan when conditions safely allow gives us more options throughout the season.
The goal isn’t simply to fish a certain lake.
The goal is to give you the best opportunity to catch fish while enjoying a safe, comfortable morning on the water.
If Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and conditions aren’t safe or won’t provide an enjoyable experience, we’ll work together to reschedule your trip whenever possible.
What to Expect on Your Charter
One question I hear often is, “What is a perch fishing trip actually like?”
The answer is simple.
It’s fun, relaxed, and hands-on.
Before Your Trip
The evening before your charter, I’ll contact you with our meeting location. Since I choose where we’ll fish based on current conditions, the launch location may vary from trip to trip.
This flexibility allows us to fish where the conditions are best rather than being locked into one location.
Meeting at the Launch
We’ll meet in the morning at the agreed-upon launch, get everyone settled into the boat, and go over a quick safety briefing before heading out.
Perch charters are offered as 4-hour and 6-hour morning trips aboard my Alumacraft and accommodate up to three guests, creating a comfortable and personal fishing experience.
Finding Fish
Every perch trip starts with a little searching.
Fish move throughout the day, and I’d rather spend a little time locating active schools than fishing where they were yesterday.
I use Garmin LiveScope to help locate perch before we ever drop a line. It’s an incredible tool that lets us see fish below the boat in real time, helping us spend more time fishing active schools and less time guessing.
Once we find fish, we’ll use the Minn Kota trolling motor with Spot-Lock to hold the boat in position so everyone can stay focused on fishing.
Time to Fish
Once we’re on fish, it’s time to have some fun.
I’ll provide all of the rods, reels, tackle, and bait needed for the trip. Depending on what’s producing best, we may fish with minnows, wigglers, nightcrawlers, shrimp, or other proven baits.
Whether you’ve fished your entire life or have never held a fishing rod before, I’ll be there to help every step of the way. I’ll gladly bait hooks, remove fish from hooks, answer questions, and help make the experience enjoyable for everyone on board.
There’s no pressure to already know what you’re doing.
That’s my job.
After the Trip
You’re welcome to keep any legal fish you catch.
If you’d like your catch cleaned, fish cleaning is available for an additional fee when arranged before your trip. Cleaning is completed after the charter, and we’ll arrange a convenient time later that day or the following day for you to pick up your fillets.
More Than Just Catching Fish
There’s no such thing as a guarantee in fishing.
Some days the fish cooperate right away. Other days we spend more time searching before we find an active school.
That’s fishing.
What I can promise is that I’ll work hard every trip, use the experience I’ve gained fishing Northern Michigan waters, and do everything I can to give you the best opportunity for a successful morning.

Spring Perch Fishing (April – May)
After a long Northern Michigan winter, there’s nothing better than getting back on the water.
As water temperatures begin to warm, yellow perch become more active and can provide excellent fishing opportunities throughout the spring. It’s a great time to enjoy cool mornings, peaceful lakes, and the excitement that comes with the start of another fishing season.

Why I Started Storm Hawk Sport Fishing
I’ve loved fishing for as long as I can remember.
When I was young, my grandfather took our family on a fishing charter out of Leland, Michigan. I still remember how fascinated I was watching the captain run the boat, help people catch fish, and create an experience everyone enjoyed.
From that day on, I knew I wanted to become a charter captain.
Today, I’m fortunate enough to do exactly that.
Whether we’re fishing for trout and salmon during the summer or perch in the spring and fall, I still enjoy the same thing that first inspired me years ago—helping people enjoy a day on the water.

Fish Cleaning
You’re welcome to keep any legal fish you catch during your trip.
Fish cleaning is available for an additional fee when arranged before your charter. Since cleaning takes additional time, we’ll coordinate a pickup later that day or the following day so your fish are cleaned and ready to take home.

What happens if the weather is bad?
Safety always comes first.
If I don’t believe conditions will provide a safe or enjoyable experience, we’ll work together to reschedule your trip whenever possible.
What happens if it rains?
A little rain usually doesn’t affect the fishing.
If the weather is expected to create an unsafe or miserable experience, we’ll discuss rescheduling your charter.
Do you provide bait?
Yes.
I’ll provide the bait that’s producing best at the time of your trip. Depending on conditions, that may include minnows, wigglers, nightcrawlers, shrimp, or other proven baits.
Do I need to bring fishing equipment?
No.
I’ll provide the rods, reels, tackle, and bait.
Can we keep the fish?
Yes.
You’re welcome to keep any legal fish you catch during your trip.
Do you clean the fish?
Fish cleaning is available for an additional fee when arranged before your trip.
What if we don’t catch very many fish?
Fishing is never guaranteed.

Will we catch anything besides perch?
Depending on where we’re fishing, it’s possible to catch bonus species like bass or walleye.
