Well a disappointing weekend in the Traverse City Salmon Classic for us. On the bright side really good friend of ours won it for the second year in the row, captain Adam on Mega Bite!
We had a lot of salmon bites on day 1 but couldn’t capitalize on them. We had a big fish on at day break fought it for 20 minutes just for it to come unhooked. We lost three other bites after we got our lines set after the big fish, we then proceeded to fight a fish for 10 minutes got it all the way to the back of the boat and had it break off about 1o feet behind the boat. At 8:30 we finally landed our first King of the morning that was a bitter sweet accomplishment. We fished for salmon another hour landed one more lost two others. We moved to fish trout to fill our tournament limit for the day. We got our trout to bite fairly fast and was able to fish salmon the last hour of the tournament with no luck. We were in 11th after day 1.
Day 2 of the tournament was a tougher bite for every one. We had half the bites we did on salmon early but were able to land a double. Shortly after we landed the double we made a move to target big lake trout. Setting lines we lost a big trout half way to the boat, then resetting the down rigger the cable snapped lost the down rigger ball… We were able to finish our tournament limit with nice lake trout. Moved to finish the last two hours looking for a few salmon bites. We did get one more as we were getting ready to pull lines, and it broke off within 5 minutes of fighting it.
Just that kind of weekend for us! But that’s ok we had a great time fishing, we ended up in 10th overall in the event.
